"You're really going to know these groups and get invested in them," Gallen said.

New judge Sara Bareilles, who joins Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman this season, replacing Nicole Scherzinger, says she's an "a capella nerd" and described her judging style as "really honest and really fair." Bareilles is a three-time Grammy-nominated singer and appeared on last year's Sing-Off finale.

Behind NBC's Sing-Off decision

"We try to be kind as well," she said of the judges. "We've all received criticism over the years and you get the most from someone who takes into consideration that you're vulnerable."

Asked why The Sing-Off has managed to perform well among TV's glut of music competitions, Folds said the show doesn't measure star potential so much as a group's ability to sing together.

When a group a capella number works, it "doesn't mean they're all the greatest singers," Folds explained. "It's about working successfully together... when it happens, it's transcendent."

In terms of judging criteria, Stockman added: "You can be technically sound with a capella music... but with music, period, it has to have soul." (Proof was provided right before the show's panel begun when last season's winner, Committed, kicked things off with an a capella rendition of Maroon 5's "This Love.")

NBC's The Sing-Off expands, but won't live

One thing that won't change this season: The shows will remain pre-taped. Production began two weeks ago, and panelists said they can only hope the results remain under wraps. "People are on the honor system," he said, adding that the show has to shoot this early because many of the contestants are college students who need to go back to school in September. "End of summer seems to be a good time for people to take time off from their everyday lives." The audience also signs non-disclosure agreements. "It's definitely a little bit risky, but the benefits outweigh the risk," Gallen said.

Said Folds: "Ten thousand people knew about the Manhattan Project and they kept it quiet."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tenthplanetproductions.blogspot.com/2011/08/bigger-sing-off-this-fall-more-episodes.html' title='A Bigger Sing-Off This Fall: More Episodes! The a capella reality show debuted last December on NBC with host Nick Lachey and judges Ben Folds, Nicole Scherzinger and Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman. Whether or not renewed a cappella fever from Glee's enormous sucess is to thank (Sing Off's arrangements feel more akin to the musical dramedy than American Idol), Sing Off's second season received such high ratings that producers expanded last night's live finale to a full two hours.

The final episode was more of a celebration, rather than a highlight reel or a suspense-building results show. The first half of the show was front-loaded with pop music talent, with each a cappella group performing with an established artist. L.A. group the Backbeats helped former UCLA a capella star Sara Bareilles on a charming "King of Anything," but the rest of the performances were blasts from the past: Alabama church boys Committed kept their R&B sound prominent when backing up Boyz II Men on "Motownphilly"; while Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town paired with their biggest fan, Nicole Scherzinger, for a classic take on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"; and Street Corner Symphony fleshed out Ben Folds' 2001 hit "Gone."

Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town and the Backbeats took the stage with Sheryl Crow for an inspired "Long Road Home." Then — after an amusing pre-taped Neil Diamond medley featuring all four finalists, plus all three judges and host Lachey — the recently announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee took the stage for a haunting version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" (from his new covers album) with help from Committed and Street Corner Symphony.

Nick Lachey reminded people that he, too, was once part of a singing group, performing "What Christmas Means to Me," before the groups sang their last songs and got final words from the judges. Each was inspired by recent outings to L.A.-area charities: the Backbeats' version of Katy Perry's "Firework" earned them praise for their emotional connection. Committed, who seemed to be the judges' favorites going into last night, brought Scherzinger to tears (she was the Paula Abdul of this series) by singing Akon's duet with Michael Jackson, "Hold My hand." Elder statesmen Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town brought down the house with "Love Train" and Street Corner Symphony ended things on a haunting note with Coldplay's "Fix You."

Then each group sang themselves off with a tune of their choosing as they were eliminated: Fourth-placers Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town exited to "Hit the Road Jack," the Backbeats sang "Goodbye to You" after they were named third, and Street Corner Symphony went for Kid Rock's "Drift Away" with their second place finish. Committed, meanwhile, brought an end to The Sing Off's second season with a triumphant "We Are the Champions."

The Sing Off worked — the groups simply couldn't fake their performances. But it was also a bite-sized portion: with only five episodes, the show can't afford to waste time on filler, so it skips the embarrassing auditions and most of the stiff pretaped packages to get straight to the performances. One has to wonder if the show would be as great if it were given a full set of episodes, but we'll see what NBC does with an expanded singing show when The Voice of America launches this spring.

Gallen signs new deal with Sony Pictures TV

Producer inks one-year firstlook pact

By Michael Schneider

Producer Joel Gallen, whose NBC competish "The Sing Off" is whistling a strong Nielsen tune, has just signed a new deal at Sony Pictures TV.
Under the one-year first-look pact, Gallen's Tenth Planet Prods. will develop new series through Sony.
Imagine the agony of this particular defeat: You perform a song called “Living on a Prayer” but lose out to some kids from a religious college.

That’s what the six men who make up an a cappella group called Face are pondering as they head home to Boulder, Colo., after being booted by the judges Monday night in the opening segment of “The Sing-Off,” a reality competition show on NBC in which eight a cappella groups are vying for $100,000 and a recording contract.

Face delivered a pretty tasty rendition of the Bon Jovi anthem, but it inexplicably lost out to Voices of Lee, a mixed group of 10 from Lee University in Tennessee whose version of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” seemed a bit muddled. How could these guys get the heave-ho, especially given that a whole other religious college (Brigham Young) is also represented in the final eight and that they had such a swell back story? One of the member’s wives couldn’t go through a pregnancy because of cancer, so the wife of another member carried the embryo for her.

Anyway, a prediction: Voices of Lee gets tossed Tuesday night, when the second installment of the four-part program will be seen.

Also shown the door Monday was the poorly named Solo, a seven-person group from Omaha whose members had an assortment of hard-luck stories. If Solo’s singing wasn’t a match for the other competitors, maybe it’s because, as one member was heard to say in a film clip, the group had been together for only about 12 weeks.

Two crowd favorites seemed to emerge from Monday’s show: Maxx Factor, four middle-aged women from Maryland, and the Beelzebubs, a bunch of enthusiastic young men from Tufts. Another prediction: Maxx Factor doesn’t last much longer. Four voices just sound too thin to compete against groups of 8 or 10 singers. Sorry, ladies.
__________________________________________________________________

New York Times: Television
December 13, 2009
by: Neil Genzlinger

If it surprises you that NBC is devoting a huge chunk of its prime time this week to a cappella music, that’s probably because you aren’t aware of just how many people, from high school students to retirees, are singing it. Joel Gallen, the executive producer of “THE SING-OFF,” which begins Monday at 8 p.m., Eastern and Pacific times, on that network, wasn’t either, until he was asked to create some kind of competition show using a cappella groups.

“It was intriguing to me, but I wasn’t that familiar with the world and the passion behind it,” Mr. Gallen said in a telephone interview. He is now, especially after overseeing the open auditions for the show, which took place live in four cities in September, as well as by video submission. “When you add all of it up, I’d say somewhere between 800 and 1,000 groups were considered,” he said.

From those, eight were chosen. In two-hour shows Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a panel of judges will narrow the field to three, at which point viewers will have a chance to vote.
