A Bigger Sing-Off This Fall: More Episodes! More Groups! More Musical Genres!

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 1:01:24 PM Pacific Daylight Time,
TV Guide

A new judge isn't the only big change coming to The Sing-Off this fall.

With NBC's decision to make the third season of The Sing-Off a weekly competition, kicking off Sept. 19 at 8/7c, it meant the show would more than double the number of episodes it produced. As a result, 16 groups will now compete (up from 10 last season) over 11 episodes (up from the five that aired over the course of one week).

Sara Bareilles is the new judge on NBC's The Sing-Off

Speaking to reporters Monday during NBC's fall TV previews, series executive producer Joel Gallen said groups will also be asked to sing in a number of new genres including rock, country, hip-hop, in addition to "the usual guilty pleasures and big hits."

The expanded season will also include more of the contestant's personal stories. "You're really going to know these groups and get invested in them," Gallen said.

New judge Sara Bareilles, who joins Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman this season, replacing Nicole Scherzinger, says she's an "a capella nerd" and described her judging style as "really honest and really fair." Bareilles is a three-time Grammy-nominated singer and appeared on last year's Sing-Off finale.

Behind NBC's Sing-Off decision

"We try to be kind as well," she said of the judges. "We've all received criticism over the years and you get the most from someone who takes into consideration that you're vulnerable."

Asked why The Sing-Off has managed to perform well among TV's glut of music competitions, Folds said the show doesn't measure star potential so much as a group's ability to sing together.

When a group a capella number works, it "doesn't mean they're all the greatest singers," Folds explained. "It's about working successfully together... when it happens, it's transcendent."

In terms of judging criteria, Stockman added: "You can be technically sound with a capella music... but with music, period, it has to have soul." (Proof was provided right before the show's panel begun when last season's winner, Committed, kicked things off with an a capella rendition of Maroon 5's "This Love.")

NBC's The Sing-Off expands, but won't live

One thing that won't change this season: The shows will remain pre-taped. Production began two weeks ago, and panelists said they can only hope the results remain under wraps. "People are on the honor system," he said, adding that the show has to shoot this early because many of the contestants are college students who need to go back to school in September. "End of summer seems to be a good time for people to take time off from their everyday lives." The audience also signs non-disclosure agreements. "It's definitely a little bit risky, but the benefits outweigh the risk," Gallen said.

Said Folds: "Ten thousand people knew about the Manhattan Project and they kept it quiet."

Playback: 'The Sing Off' Ends Second Season on High Note

Neil Diamond, Sheryl Crow, Sara Bareilles join finalists on stage

By Erica Futterman

December 21, 2010 8:56 AM EDT

After two weeks and five episodes, Committed won The Sing Off's second season, beating out Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town, Street Corner Symphony and the Backbeats for $100,000 and a Sony Music recording contract. The a capella reality show debuted last December on NBC with host Nick Lachey and judges Ben Folds, Nicole Scherzinger and Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman. Whether or not renewed a cappella fever from Glee's enormous sucess is to thank (Sing Off's arrangements feel more akin to the musical dramedy than American Idol), Sing Off's second season received such high ratings that producers expanded last night's live finale to a full two hours.

The final episode was more of a celebration, rather than a highlight reel or a suspense-building results show. The first half of the show was front-loaded with pop music talent, with each a cappella group performing with an established artist. L.A. group the Backbeats helped former UCLA a capella star Sara Bareilles on a charming "King of Anything," but the rest of the performances were blasts from the past: Alabama church boys Committed kept their R&B sound prominent when backing up Boyz II Men on "Motownphilly"; while Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town paired with their biggest fan, Nicole Scherzinger, for a classic take on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"; and Street Corner Symphony fleshed out Ben Folds' 2001 hit "Gone."

Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town and the Backbeats took the stage with Sheryl Crow for an inspired "Long Road Home." Then — after an amusing pre-taped Neil Diamond medley featuring all four finalists, plus all three judges and host Lachey — the recently announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee took the stage for a haunting version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" (from his new covers album) with help from Committed and Street Corner Symphony.

Nick Lachey reminded people that he, too, was once part of a singing group, performing "What Christmas Means to Me," before the groups sang their last songs and got final words from the judges. Each was inspired by recent outings to L.A.-area charities: the Backbeats' version of Katy Perry's "Firework" earned them praise for their emotional connection. Committed, who seemed to be the judges' favorites going into last night, brought Scherzinger to tears (she was the Paula Abdul of this series) by singing Akon's duet with Michael Jackson, "Hold My hand." Elder statesmen Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town brought down the house with "Love Train" and Street Corner Symphony ended things on a haunting note with Coldplay's "Fix You."

Then each group sang themselves off with a tune of their choosing as they were eliminated: Fourth-placers Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town exited to "Hit the Road Jack," the Backbeats sang "Goodbye to You" after they were named third, and Street Corner Symphony went for Kid Rock's "Drift Away" with their second place finish. Committed, meanwhile, brought an end to The Sing Off's second season with a triumphant "We Are the Champions."

The Sing Off worked — the groups simply couldn't fake their performances. But it was also a bite-sized portion: with only five episodes, the show can't afford to waste time on filler, so it skips the embarrassing auditions and most of the stiff pretaped packages to get straight to the performances. One has to wonder if the show would be as great if it were given a full set of episodes, but we'll see what NBC does with an expanded singing show when The Voice of America launches this spring.

Gallen signs new deal with Sony Pictures TV

Producer inks one-year firstlook pact

Producer Joel Gallen, whose NBC competish "The Sing Off" is whistling a strong Nielsen tune, has just signed a new deal at Sony Pictures TV.

Under the one-year first-look pact, Gallen's Tenth Planet Prods. will develop new series through Sony. Gallen has hired Nikki Gillingham to oversee development at Tenth Planet.

Gallen, who's known as a go-to producer for specials, said he was eager to expand his series domain. "I feel rejuvenated and look forward to developing and producing many more projects with Sony," he said.

Besides "The Sing Off," now in its second season, Gallen and Tenth Planet are also producers on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," which is heading into its sixth season.

"The Sing Off," which concludes its run next Monday with a now-expanded 2 1/2-hour finale, is up double digits vs. last year among adults 18-49. The show's Monday episode this week pulled off a strong 3.3 rating in the demo.

Gallen's other credits include Comedy Central's series of roasts, "CNN Heroes," the MTV Movie Awards, "Hope for Haiti" and "America: A Tribute to Heroes." He also directed the Sony feature "Not Another Teen Movie."

Gillingham worked with Gallen as a producer on "CNN Heroes" and the "Hope for Haiti" telethon.

Hope for Haiti Telethon

Actor George Clooney is planning to host a TV telethon next Friday to raise money for the people of Haiti.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Clooney has an agreement from MTV to air a telethon on all its channels on Jan. 22.

He'll be raising money for victims of the earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, on Tuesday.

Clooney said he planned to recruit talent for the telethon from among his celebrity friends. Joel Gallen — who handled the telethon held after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S. — will be the producer.

The Up in the Air star is the latest celebrity to turn his attention to the stricken nation. Musician Wyclef Jean and actor Jimmy Jean-Louis of Heroes, both of Haitian background, have issued public appeals for help.

Academy Award-winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis is also approaching everyone he knows to get support for Haiti.

"Haiti is a country that's long been forgotten, although it's only an hour from our shores," Haggis said, explaining why he took such an interest in the nation, even before the latest crisis.
