Gallen signs new deal with Sony Pictures TV

Producer inks one-year firstlook pact

Producer Joel Gallen, whose NBC competish "The Sing Off" is whistling a strong Nielsen tune, has just signed a new deal at Sony Pictures TV.

Under the one-year first-look pact, Gallen's Tenth Planet Prods. will develop new series through Sony. Gallen has hired Nikki Gillingham to oversee development at Tenth Planet.

Gallen, who's known as a go-to producer for specials, said he was eager to expand his series domain. "I feel rejuvenated and look forward to developing and producing many more projects with Sony," he said.

Besides "The Sing Off," now in its second season, Gallen and Tenth Planet are also producers on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," which is heading into its sixth season.

"The Sing Off," which concludes its run next Monday with a now-expanded 2 1/2-hour finale, is up double digits vs. last year among adults 18-49. The show's Monday episode this week pulled off a strong 3.3 rating in the demo.

Gallen's other credits include Comedy Central's series of roasts, "CNN Heroes," the MTV Movie Awards, "Hope for Haiti" and "America: A Tribute to Heroes." He also directed the Sony feature "Not Another Teen Movie."

Gillingham worked with Gallen as a producer on "CNN Heroes" and the "Hope for Haiti" telethon.
